How to Win at Texas Hold'em
-
Low Stakes No Limit Hold'em Pitfalls
Your low stakes no limit hold’em poker play can be the start of a long road leading to the biggest poker stages in the world. Although many people feel that lower stakes games offer some more difficult challenges than some of the higher stakes no limit hold’em games due to the preponderance of amateurs who can put bad beats on stronger players, you must be able to master these games before you move up. If you’re going to play these games, here are some pitfalls to avoid.
Playing Too Many Hands
Although “any two cards can win” in no limit Texas hold’em poker, the
texas holdem odds suggest that most of the time, any two cards won’t. While it’s true that seeing a flop with two random cards may only cost you one blind, two dollars or less in most low stakes no limit
Texas Hold'em games, it will often cost you more. If someone raises behind you, you may feel compelled to call since you are now “invested” in the pot, although this is not really true. Furthermore, many players have trouble getting away even if they only hit a small part of the flop, a problem that can end up costing you your whole stack if you play a lot of marginal hands. Your best bet starting out is to stick to premium hands like pairs and high cards.
Getting Too Aggressive
We all get a rush out of seeing someone push a huge stack into the middle and forcing a superior hand to fold. Running off an opponent is a great feeling and it’s no wonder many hold’em poker players enjoy experiencing it. The reason this works on television in events like the WSOP, however, is that a player moving all-in is often putting their opponent’s entire tournament life (and in some cases, hundreds of thousands of dollars) at stake. You pushing in $20 in your .50/$1 online no limit hold’em game aren’t likely to scare off anyone with a real hand. This is not to say that you should never bluff or be aggressive in a low-stakes, no limit
texas holdem online game, it is just that you must be selectively aggressive, and choose the opponents you will be aggressive against very carefully.
Discounting Skill
It’s tempting to treat poker as just another gambling game, where you put down your money and hope to get lucky. It isn’t. Even at low stakes, you will usually have the most fun when you win by playing correctly and realize what
odds texas holdem gives you. If the game you are playing represents a very small portion of your bankroll, gambling it up probably won’t break you, and could result in some fun short-term profits, but in the long run, the odds will catch up with you, and when they do, your bankroll, and the potential to move up to higher stakes games, will suffer.
